Class divide over Child Trust Funds

Child Trust Funds (CTFs) are proving more popular in wealthier areas of the country than they are among poorer families, new analysis suggests.

According to research conducted by the Conservative Party, 85 per cent of parents from Henley and mid-Sussex make use of CTFs, compared with 57 per cent in Bradford West.

Significantly, fewer than one in 20 children from Henley and mid-Sussex are classed as living in a deprived household, while the equivalent figure for Bradford West is around one in four.

According to shadow families spokesperson David Willetts, more needs to be done to ensure children from poorer backgrounds are catered for.

"The aim of encouraging parents to save for their children's future is a laudable one," he commented.

"But it is deeply worrying to learn that those who could benefit most from Child Trust Funds are among the least likely to use them."

Last month, a survey by Engage Mutual Assurance suggested one in five parents has borrowed money from their child's savings account .
