Record numbers making ethical investments

Thu, 02 Dec 2010

Record numbers of Britons are investing with a conscience, it has been noted.

Writing for the Financial Times, Lucy Warwick-Ching observed that the level of investment into UK ethical retail funds is rising.

More investors take the moral high ground on a wide range of issues, she said.

"Ethical - or socially responsible - investment is influenced by social, environmental or political issues," she explained.

"Ethical funds typically either look for companies that are actively pursuing ways of improving the environment, international relations or the economy, or avoid companies that they consider have a potentially negative effect on the way we live."

The range of ethical funds has grown enormously over the past decade, according to Ms Warwick-Ching.

There are currently 75 ethical funds in the UK, she noted, while three more are to be launched this summer.

The majority of funds have their own ethical committees to decide the criteria.
