Expert predicts a tough year for UK equity markets

Tue, 17 Feb 2009

The year ahead will be a tough one for people with investments in UK equity markets, one expert has warned.

Leigh Harrison, head of UK equities at investment firm Threadneedle, explained that the outlook for 2009 is now even bleaker than was thought, making it a difficult environment.

Despite this, people who are willing to put cash into investment markets should find there are bargains to be had, he claimed.

"The market has clearly absorbed an awful lot of bad news and, based on return-on-equity and long-term earnings trends, equities represent reasonable value at current levels," Mr Harrison said.

However, the short-term direction of investment markets is hard to call and sentiment is likely to oscillate between pessimism and optimism, he added.

Yesterday, Andrew Lake, co-manager of the F&C European High Yield Bond claimed that investments in CCC-rated bonds are currently offering good returns, especially when compared to other assets in their class.
