Investors have expressed optimism for those putting money into the UK stock market in the next 12 months.

According to a poll by the Association of Investment Companies (AIC), 58 per cent of investment managers believe that the FTSE will end 2009 between 5,500 and 6,000, with 74 per cent predicting a further rise after that.

Some 50 per cent expressed confidence for equities in 2010, while 28 per cent said gold would be the best-performing asset .

The UK resources sector was tipped as one which will outperform others in the coming year, while emerging markets were recommended as the best region.

Annabel Brodie-Smith, communications director of the AIC, said: "After a strong market revival this year, fund managers are generally optimistic about the prospects for 2010, with most expecting to see markets rise and the FTSE end the year in positive territory."

John Greenwood, chief economist at Invesco Perpetual, recently said that those looking to make the most of the economic upturn should be investing in emerging markets.
