Retail investors upbeat, expert claims

Thu, 11 Sep 2008

Those with investments in Britain's retail sector are "upbeat", a new survey has found.

According to the Great British Investor report, published by the Investment Management Association (IMA), those involved in the field are cautious, but not pessimistic.

Richard Saunders, chief executive at the IMA, said:" Despite the credit crunch and resulting negative investor confidence in May investors were surprisingly upbeat."

However, as the index measures sentiment in May, it is likely that events since then have "further affected confidence".

The study also found that 70 per cent of investors have used a financial advisor at some point and 22 per cent have had one for five years or more.

Yesterday, Nigel Bliss, senior portfolio manager of the Lincoln Far East Trust at Mondrian Investment Partners, stated that companies involved in the materials sector of the Far East are currently "attractive".

According to Mr Bliss, the last year has seen an upturn in the fortunes of such firms.
