Asian markets good for investments, expert claims

Asian markets should continue to offer good investments despite the economic downturn, one expert has claimed.

According to Kathryn Matthews, chief information officer for Fidelity International, while the area will be impacted by a slowdown in the US, its investment market should prove more resilient than others.

Ms Matthews believes that strong underlying factors such as low-levels of debt and steady exports means that investments will continue to offer good returns.

However, she does warn that inflation is a risk to this situation.

Ms Matthews said: "Many governments have been willing to put up with the inflation in the short-term, using pricing policies and subsidies to protect the man in the street."

But governments are now moving to address the issue through interest rate increases and the long-term outlook for investments in the region is "very positive", she added.

Earlier this week, Graham Ashby, head of retail UK equities at Credit Suisse, warned that equity tracker investments might not offer a great return as index such as the FTSE 100 can lack diversity.
